| Abstract |
| Frequent localized heavy rainfall associated with climate change has increased the risk of inland flooding in urban and rural areas, highlighting the need for effective flood mitigation measures. Stormwater detention facilities have been widely adopted to reduce peak runoff and enhance the performance of existing drainage systems. This study evaluated the flood mitigation performance of a proposed stormwater detention facility in Chogye District, Hapcheon-gun, Korea, using the XP-SWMM model. The study area has experienced repeated inundation due to insufficient drainage capacity and the influence of the external water level of Sannae Stream. Based on the basic and detailed designs of the stormwater detention facility project, an XP-SWMM model was established to analyze inundation characteristics before and after the installation of the proposed detention facilities. Flood mitigation performance was evaluated in terms of maximum inundation depth, flooded area, and flood volume under a 50-year design rainfall event. The simulation results showed that, before the installation of the detention facilities, the maximum inundation depth, flooded area, and flood volume were 1.90 m, 19.43 ha, and 25,259 m³, respectively. After the installation of the proposed detention facilities, no inundation occurred within the study area under the same rainfall conditions, indicating that the planned facilities satisfied the target flood protection level. By reducing peak runoff, the proposed facilities effectively improved the performance of the existing drainage network and pumping station without requiring major upgrades to the drainage system. These results demonstrate that XP-SWMM can effectively support the planning and performance evaluation of stormwater detention facilities and provide a practical basis for implementing flood mitigation projects in flood-prone areas. Furthermore, the methodology presented in this study provides practical guidance for the planning and design of stormwater detention facilities in similar urban and semi-urban drainage basins. |
