Title
Performance of a Ceramic-Media Anaerobic Biofilter Coupled with a High-Rate Filter for Pretreatment of Textile Wastewater

Abstract
Biofilm filtration has been adopted as an alternative to activated sludge and oxidation processes for treating textile wastewater, which typically contains high levels of solids, organic matter, and chromaticity that hinder conventional treatment. Media selection is a critical design factor in biofiltration performance. This study evaluated an anaerobic biofilm filter (ANBF) packed with ceramic bead media (CBM), coupled with a high-rate filter (HRF) packed with cube sponge media (CSM), as a pretreatment alternative to conventional primary settling for textile wastewater. The CSM-HRF system achieved removal efficiencies comparable to coagulation-sedimentation using high coagulant doses and to conventional settling, despite operating at a much shorter hydraulic retention time (HRT: 0.3 h vs. 3.0 h). High suspended solids (SS) removal in the CSM-HRF unit also reduced influent loading to the downstream CBM-ANBF, mitigating headloss development. At filtration velocities below 20 m/d, the CBM-ANBF achieved removal efficiencies of 43% (SS), 41% (COD), 42% (BOD), 27% (color), 22% (T-N), and 30% (T-P). Compared with conventional physicochemical treatment, the optimized CSM-HRF/CBM-ANBF configuration provided higher pollutant removal with shorter HRT and produced less sludge, demonstrating its potential as an efficient pretreatment strategy for textile wastewater.
