| Abstract |
| In Korea’s Third National Sewerage Master Plan, emerging challenges such as population decline and carbon neutrality have been incorporated alongside traditional issues in the sewerage sector. The development of a carbon-neutral sewerage treatment system has become increasingly important; nevertheless, preparatory efforts for effective implementation remain insufficient. Achieving this goal requires the establishment of a reliable methodology for accurately quantifying carbon emissions from sewage treatment plants (STPs), followed by targeted improvements to existing unit processes based on assessment results. Furthermore, a comprehensive annual implementation plan is needed to systematically support this transition. In this study, two large-scale, three medium-scale, and three small-scale STPs were selected, and the Carbon Calculation Tool was applied to evaluate CO2 emissions and their characteristics. The results indicate that, regarding CO2 emissions per unit volume of treated sewage, small-scale STPs exhibited higher emissions than large-scale facilities due to excessive energy consumption. Furthermore, when emissions were classified by Scope, large-scale STPs demonstrated more efficient energy management, resulting in significantly lower Scope 2 emissions than small-scale plants. These results suggest avoiding overestimation and overdesign during the design phase, optimizing operational energy consumption, and promoting the use of renewable energy. This study contributes to understanding CO2 emissions and the relative contributions of unit processes in STPs of different scales, and guides the development of assessment tools suited to domestic conditions. |
