Abstract
Recently, due to the effects of climate change, torrential rains are increasing in frequency . This increasing frequency in which a large amount of rainfall falls within a short period increases the probability of flooding that can cause enormous human and material damage. Therefore, this study attempts to understand the characteristics of the inundation basin in the study area using rainfall data analyzed through radar images and 10-minute observed rainfall data from the Korea Meteorological Administration rainfall observatory for the Busan Oncheoncheon basin, which is an area regularly subject to flooding. To this end, a numerical model is constructed using the MIKE-Urban program with local input data (such as the DEM of the study area), and the radar rainfall data’s accuracy is verified through a comparative analysis of the observed meteorological service rainfall data and radar rainfall data. Hydrographs obtained for both rainfall data sets (observed and radar) for the August 2014 flooding event are compared as well as the flooding extents generated when simulating using the MIKE-Urban model. Results show that the difference between flood extents (<5%) is small enough to consider radar rainfall a suitable dataset for rainfall input in regions without rainfall gauges.
