Abstract
Unmanned surface vehicle (USV) have recently emerged as an effective tool for algal bloom monitoring in water, providing users with spatial and temporal resolution. The purpose of this study is evaluate the effect of travel route interval and length of USV(Unmanned Surface Vehicle) on the 2-dimensional distribution resolution for river algae mapping and monitoring. The USV is 1.3 m long and weighs about 10 kg. The operating speed is up to 5 m/s. The communication frequency is over 2 km and the communication frequency is 2.400~2.483GHz (FHSS). The USV is equipped with AlgaeChek Ultra (Modernwater, England) for chlorophyll-a monitoring. Also, The USV is equipped with lidar and camera sensors for collision avoidance. The study acquired sensing data using UAV on the reservoir of N dam near Nakdong River, one of four major rivers in South Korea. The travel route interval was set to a) 5 m b) 10 m and c) 20 m. Data acquired by USV is processed as inverse distance weight (IDW) method and then prepared two dimensional map using QGIS(Quantum geographic information system). The USV enable the water quality managers and researchers to monitor and predict algae blooms at higher spatial and temporal precision, reducing cost and time.
