Abstract
Various studies reported that the bio-electrochemical anaerobic digestion (BEAD) reactor improved COD removal efficiency, methane production, and methane yield. However, actual methane yield based on the removed COD can not overcome theoretical methane yield based on the removed COD. The methane yield would be improved from hydrogen produced in reactor by electrolysis, however, the possibility of this was very low because the amount of hydrogen produced by electrolysis was extremely low. This study confirmed that the BEAD-accelerated stabilization and methane production rates. Interestingly, the methane yields of AD and BEAD reactors were close to theoretical value (0.35 L-CH4/g-CODremoved) at the final steady state. These results show that BEAD cannot overcome the theoretical methane yield without additional electron donor and BEAD can improve COD removal and methane production rate. The primary factors influencing methane production and yield were chemical compositions of hydrogen and carbon, as well as the relative O/H ratio. In other word, there are no mechanism for improving methane production in the BEAD reactor based on theoretical chemical composition of substrates. Methane production is only improved by a higher COD removal efficiency by the BEAD reactor than of AD reactor. Further research should be conducted to confirm bio-electrochemical reaction mechanism in the BEAD reactor.
