Title
Evaluation on the Characteristics of Sludge Settleability Improvement using Sewage-sludge Activated Carbon
김연권 Youn-kwon Kim
Abstract
The performance of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) which have a low capability of solid-liquid separation at the secondary settletank gradually deteriorates the water quality of effluent. This study was conducted to increase and stabilize the sludge settleability within a short period of time by dosing the Sewage-Sludge Activated Carbon (S-SAC) as a Settleabillity Improvement Additives (SIAs) when the capability of solid-liquid separation deteriorates in secondary settletank. It was shown that S-SAC have the characteristics of SIAs similar to Coconut Activated Carbon (CAC), and the zone settling velocity is almost 4-5 times faster than that of the reference sample. The results for comparison of S-SAC and CAC experiments were obtained that regardless of the material of activated carbon, under high concentration of MLSS, small particle samples showed low efficiency and large particle size samples showed high efficiency of settleability improvement. In addition, experimental results with S-SAC was obtained that there was no significant difference in settleability improvement effect, according to particle size, and at least 27% the volume reduction effect can be expected under MLSS 3,400 mg/l. All the results, it was considered that the S-SAC was proved to be the promising material as an efficient SIAs.
