Abstract
Floods occur more often nowadays, due to industrialization, urbanization and climate change. Many theoretical models has been applied to predict the time and spatial extent of floods in a river or lake. However, theoretical models can hardly predict highly complex and uncertain floods, which are caused by a series of natural processes, such as rainfall, runoff and drainage. Prediction with a simple theoretical or statistical model seems impossible for predicting such complex and uncertain natural processes. Recently, many researchers and engineers started using information technology (IT) and combining IT with their theoretical backgrounds, to solve complex and uncertain hydrological and hydraulic problems. Therefore, in this study, we applied and tested IT-based simulation tools, which are HEC-RAS and TELEMAC-2D, to analyze flow and flood inundation of a natural river. TELEMAC-2D could simulate river flow and flood inundation in a two-dimensional computational domain, whereas HEC-RAS could simulate in an one-dimensional domain. By comparing measured and simulation results in this study, we proved the capability of the TELEMAC system for simulating river flow and flood inundation in a more realistic way.
