Abstract
In the present study, water purification capabilities of porous concrete with EM(Effective Microorganisms) and volcanic pumice were compared and assessed in a laboratory scale test and a field test (M reservoir located in Republic Korea), in which regular concrete that can be filled with porous concrete was used. Site test on porous concrete with EM and volcanic pumice showed results that the pH range was shown to be 7.8~9.0, demonstration that So this range did not have a significant effect on growth of microorganisms. In case of SS, T-N and T-P was shown to decreases in removal efficiency corresponding to decreases in water temperature. Since the inconsistent removal efficiencies of 7.00% and 10.42% were shown for BOD and T-N respectively, they were found to fail to affect microorganisms. The consistent removal efficiencies of 23.44%, 11.13%, and 8.70% were shown for SS, COD, and T-P respectively due to the porous concrete using volcanic rocks and microorganisms. It is judged that the main reason why they were found to be lower than the removal efficiencies shown in the laboratory test results was the environmental differences between the laboratory and field experiments, such as the limited space, the constant fluid flow velocity, etc. In conclusion, the effects of the onsite utilization of porous concrete using volcanic rocks on water quality are judged to be positive because it served sufficiently as a habitat of microorganisms and the organic matter was removed due to the activity of microorganisms and biofilms.
