Title
Optimum Conditions for the Calcium Borate Formation Reaction of Recovering Boron from Wastewater
서효진 Hyo Jin Seo , 김명진 Myoung Jin Kim
Abstract
This study aimed at finding the optimum conditions for the process of recovering boron in the form of calcium borate by adding calcium hydroxide into boron artificial wastewater (500 mg-B/L). For the study, we used a saturated solution of calcium hydroxide, instead of the solid calcium hydroxide used in previous studies, during the process and then compared the recovery and purity of the calcium borates recovered between the two different states. The optimum conditions such as heating temperature, dose of solid calcium hydroxide, and reaction time were determined for the boron recovering process using a saturated solution. It was obviously confirmed that the calcium borate was produced in the form of Ca2B2O5·H2O during the process. The recovery and purity of calcium borate produced using a saturated solution of calcium hydroxide were 80 % and 71 %, respectively, and those using solid calcium hydroxide were 93 % and 42 %. The finally determined optimum conditions are as follows: 100 ℃ (heating temperature), 1.71 g (dose of solid calcium hydroxide), and 60 minutes (reaction time). In other words, we could obtain a highly pure calcium borate with high recovery at a lower temperature in less time compared to the previous studies, meaning that we should have enhanced potential to recover boron from the wastewater and then reuse in industry.
