Abstract
The adsorption of anthraquinone dye Alizarin Red S(ARS), on granular activated carbon (GAC) was evaluated. In the present study, we investigated various physicochemical parameters such as reaction temperature, initial pH, initial dye concentration and pre-treatment by HCl to achieve maximum adsorption. The adsorption reached at the equilibrium state about 3h from the beginning of the experiments. With varying the initial dye concentrations, the results showed that the adsorption capacity increased as the initial concentration increased along with reaction temperature. The kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model(=0.999) and the adsorption rate constants decreased with increasing initial concentration of Alizarin Red S. The equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich models. The results indicate that the Freundlich model provides the best correlation of the experimental data. The thermodynamic parameters were also determined. The enthalpy change of adsorption was 102.1J/mol We have also studied the effect of initial pH (2-10) to study the adsorption performance. Adsorption rate increased for the activated carbon pretreated with increasing concentration of HCl.
