Title
Treatment of Acid Mine Drainage Using Sericite and Microalgae
최희정 Hee Jeong Choi
Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the heavy metal removal and biomass productivity in the Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) using sericite and microalgae. The experiment operated 6 days in the sericite and microalgae hybrid system, and using sericite powder and microalgae as Chlorella sp. The obtained result indicated that the biomass productivity of 2.95 g/L from 1.12 g/L initial concentration in 6 days was reached with light transmittance of 94% at a 305 mm depth in the optical panel photobioreactor (OPPBR). The total removal rate of Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, As and Cd was found to be 94.89%, 95.34%, 94.16%, 88.99%, 83.33% and 80.59% in the AMD using sericite and Chlorella sp. hybrid system, respectively. Additionally, the relationship between biomass and concentration of heavy metal was 0.9680, 0.9580, 0.9555, 0.9959, 0.9755 and 0.9820 for Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, As and Cd, respectively. These results indicated that the sericite and microalgae hybrid system was highly effective for heavy metal removal when compared to the conventional biological process in the AMD. Therefore, the sericite and microalgae system was effective for heavy metal removal and biomass productivity and can be applied to treat AMD in treatment plant.
