Title
Development of Chart Producing Program for Controlling Corrosive Water in Distribution Water Pipes

Abstract
As a tool for controlling corrosive waters, we developed a program called CHRT_CL that could generate charts to meet the conditions as temperatures and ionic strengths. The program composed of five sub modules, and each module incorporated five parameters including acidity, C2, alkalinity, pH, and calcium ion. Water quality of the raw water was estimated to be undersaturated because the value of the calcium line 90mg/L passing through the intersection of the alkalinity and pH lines exceeds the measured calcium value 41mg/L. The value of pH at saturation is found to be 8.6, and Langelier index becomes -0.4 which means the water is corrosive and calcium carbonate would not be precipitated. Thus, the water requires treatment as the injection of water conditioning chemicals to promote an oversaturated (protective) condition. As a result of adding 5mg/L of lime, the calcium value for the interim water 46mg/L exceeds the value of the calcium line 15mg/L, and the water becomes oversaturated. When 5mg/L of caustic soda is added as a conditioning chemical, the calcium value for the interim water 46mg/L exceeds the value of the calcium line 17mg/L, and the water becomes oversaturated. Both chemicals are possible to use for the water to be favorable for the formation of a protective film. In conclusion, the program could serve as a useful tool for the control of corrosive water.
