Abstract
The effects of membrane filtration process (MFP) in improving the effluent quality from wastewater treatment plant were investigated. Granular sludge-sequencing batch reactor (GS-SBR) was used as a bioreactor. MFP using a submerged and external type module with a pore size of 0.22㎛ and a total surface area of 0.047㎡ was applied for this research. The influent concentration were on average COD, TN, TP concentration of 600mg/L, 30mg/L, and 6mg/L, respectively. As a result, the GS-SBR coupled with MFP was very effective in reducing particulate matter as well as organic and nutrient removal. Transmembrane pressure (TMP) of MFP increased in proportion to the increase of filtration velocity of MFP, whereas the efficiency of MFP on particulate matter removal slightly decreased with the increase of filtration velocity of MFP due to an improper formation of cake layer on membrane surface. The TMP of external MFP was developed much lower than that of submerged MFP due to an effective pretreatment of GS-SBR process on particulate matter as well as organic and nutrient removal.
