Abstract
Sandwich-type microbial fuel cell (SMFC) using restaurant wastewater (SCODcr 500 mg/L) was operated under fed-batch mode. Effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and phosphate buffer solution (PBS) on electricity generation and COD removal were investigated. The SMFC showed the maximum power density (Pmax) of 8.3 W/m³ and COD removal efficiency (CODre) of 74.5% at HRT of 12h with phosphate buffer solution. However, Pmax and CODre were respectively decreased to 2.7W/m3 and 64.4% without PBS Pmax slightly slightly increased to 3.6 W/m³ and CODre decreased to 44.7% as HRT decreased. It showed that MFC can use restaurant wastewater as carbon source.
