Abstract
This study was aimed at development of Na-zeolite which can effectively remove ammonia in wastewater discharged into streams and lakes. Na-zeolite was synthesized by using the fly ash generated from a thermoelectric plant. The fly ash was heated and activated by NaOH solution. The synthesized Na-zeolite was utilized to remove NH₄+ ion from NH₄NO₃ solution. The ammonium ion exchange capacity of Na-zeolite was investigated and the effects of zeolite weight, initial NH₄+ ion concentration and pH on ion exchange capacity were examined. The adsorption capacity of NH₄+ ion onto Na-zeolite was observed to be enlarged as the amount of Na-zeolite and initial NH₄+ ion concentration increases and this process was shown to be a second order reation. The adsorption behavior NH₄+ ion at equilibrium was explained well by Freundlich adsorption isotherm.
