Abstract
The objectives of this study were to investigate the pH effects of raw water and basicity of coagulants on turbidity removal with several raw waters having different level of turbidity, alkalinity and pH, and to propose new design and operating criteria for rapid mixing and sedimentation basin. The Response Surface Method (RSM) with jar tests as an alternative to the conventional coagulation methods were investigated in this study. Analysis results of the optimum combination of coagulant dose, pH, velocity gradient (G) and detention time (t) were suggested with respect to the on the basicity of the coagulants based on the highest removal efficiency of turbidity. A new design factors for rapid mixing system using high basicity coagulant were proposed to velocity gradient, G of 100-160 sec¹, and detention time, t of 60-90sec based on the results of experiments and RSM for turbidity rcmoval. Surfacc loading ratc using high basicity coagulants in jar test was approximately 2 times higher than that of low or medium basicity coagulants based on the 80% turbidity removal.
