Abstract
Sericite phyllosilicate native mica mineral is a swelling, layered inorganic material, widely available natural mineral in South Korea. has similar characteristics to bentonite. Sericite is a subspecies of muscovite occurring in large amount in natural deposits. Because of eco-friendliness and low cost as compared to other materials, sericite gained much more interest in area of environmental engineering. However, the surface structure should be modified in order to improve the applicability of the sericite. In present study, 3-Meracaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS) has been used to expand the interlayer space of sericite. Sericite and modified sericite have been used to study the removal of 0411) from aqueous solution. Adsorption experiments were carried out in batch adsorption method. Removal of Cu(ll) were studied with various parameters like effect of pH. time, initial concentration, and ionic strength. The modified organo sericite exhibited higher uptake of Cu(ll) than sericite. At 0.8 g/50 mL of dosage of sericite exhibited 38 % removal and organo sericite exhibited 44 % removal efficiency. There is no significance increase of adsorption with increase in adsorbent dosage, so 0.8 g/50 mL was chosen as optimum for further studies. At contact time of 360 minutes, sericite showed a 43% uptake rate. MPTS-sericite showed 49% uptake. Based on the results, it was observed that chemically modified sericite could be used successfully in waste water treatment.
