Abstract
This research was to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics through the proximate analysis, elements analysis, calorific value analysis and the leaching and content analysis of heavy metals for the RDF(refuse derived fuel) recycling of sewage sludge cake as a thermoelectric power plant and so on. Eight sewage treatment facilities (Kangbyun, Suyeong, Nambu, Noksan, Joongang, Yeongdo, Dongbu and Seobu) in Busan City were selected, and their sludge samples were collected. The results of analyzing the characteristics for the sewage sludge revealed 78.7% of water content, 6.69% of ash content, 14.01% of volatile content, 0.64% of fixed carbon and pH 7.6 in regards to the total mean of the industrial analysis and pH. It satisfies the supplementary fuel standard for thermal power plant of below 35% in ash content. The element analysis revealed in the mean of 34.40% of carbon (C), 5.74% of hydrogen (H), 16.29% of oxygen (O), 4.74% of nitrogen (N), 0.68% of sulfur (S), 1.57% of phosphorous (P) and 0.26% of chlorine (CI), thereby satisfying also the fuel production standard of below 2% of sulfur content. In addition, in the case of caloric values, the results indicated that the Joongang sewage treatment plant has the highest value of 4,285 kcal/kg and the Nambu sewage treatment plant has the lowest value of 2,358 kcal/kg. They respectively satisfy the fuel production standards of above 3,000 kcal/kg and 2,000 kcal/kg. In regards to the leaching test, the results showed that the item of chromium (Cr6+) exceeded the standard at the Kangbyun and Seobu sewage treatment plants. The results for heavy metals content analysis revealed that hydrargyrum(Hg), cadmium(Cd) and plumbum (Pb) exceeded the standard at the Kangbyun, Joongang, Yeongdo and Suyoung sewage treatment plants. Thereby, their sludges were inappropriateness as the thermal power plant supplementary fuel.
