Title
Simultaneous Removal of Particulates and Dissolved Organics by Activated Carbon Membrane with Filamentous Carbon Layer
배상대 Sang Dae Bae
Abstract
A novel activated carbon membrane with filamentous carbon layer was fabricated using a polymer latex dipping and a methane deposition method. The simultaneous removal of particulates such as inorganic particles derived from rusty pipelines, and dissolved organics such as 2-propyl alcohol (IPA) and natural organic matters (NOM) were demonstrated by cross-flow filtration. As a result, the whiskers contribute the preservations of high flux of the membrane as well as adsorption capacity for the simultaneous removal. Numerical analysis indicated that the void space of cake layer formed on filamentous carbon layer is four to five times larger than that formed on naked activated carbon membrane surface. It is also suggested that the deterioration of adsorption capacity due to blocking by suspended or large molecular dissolved matter also to be prevented by filamentous carbon layer. These results indicated that our novel developed activated carbon membrane with filamentous carbon layer has long lifetime, and it is feasible especially for a domestic water purifier.
