Abstract
The various species in wastewater may have a direct influence on the microbial activity and efficiency in biological wastewater treatment process. Especially, characteristic of wastewater as influent from Reverse Osmosis(RO) brine water is fed also tends to affect the microbial behavioral characteristics within the process. In this research, lab-scale modified A2O process was operated and monitored to evaluate performance changing of biological nutrient removal during the 5th weeks. The evaluation of biological wastewater treatment and micro-organism acclimation were performed to treat RO brine water which contained high TDS and Cl-. As a result of acute microbial activity test at various RO brine water concentration, the optimum TDS concentration for microbial growth ranged from 4,000 mg/L to 7,000 mg/L. It was showed that the removal capacity of organics and nitrogen matter in A2O process was similar to the removal of those in general activated sludge process, and specific phosphate removal rate was not much affected by RO brine water characteristics. Therefore, activated sludge process is considered to have a potential to be applicable to RO brine water treatment if RO brine water concentration range is below the concentration at acute microbe activity test level.
