Title
Adsorption Kinetics of Tartrazine Dye onto Granular Activated Carbon
이종집 Jong Jib Lee
Abstract
The adsorption characteristics of tartrazine dye onto activated carbon has been investigated for the adsorption of in aqueous solution in a batch system with respect to initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Experimental isotherm data collected at different temperatures were fitted in Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. The equilibrium process can be well discribed by Freundlich isotherm in the temperature range from 293K to 313K. Kinetic studies of adsorption of tartrazine were carried out at 293, 303, 313K, using aqueous solutions with 250, 500 and 1,000 mg/L concentration of tartrazine. The adsorption process followed a pseuo second order model, and the adsorption rate constant(k2) decreased with increasing initial concentration of tartrazine. the activation energy, change of free energy(△G˚), enthalpy(△H˚), and entropy(△S˚) were calculated to predict the nature adsorption. The estimated values for △G˚ were -3.66~-1.57 kJ/mol over activated carbon at 500mg/L, indicated toward a spontaneous process. The negative value for △H˚ indicates that the adsorption of tartrazine dye on activated carbon is an exothermic process.
