Abstract
Intercalation or grafting of the organic molecule within the clay material as it exchanges the inter-layered alkali cation (either sodium or potassium) found to be newer area of research in polymer nano-composites. Actually, inoculation of organic molecule prop up the layers i.e. basal spacing of clay and enhance the specific surface area of clay and also the introduced organic functional group are to be selective and suitable for the sorption of pollutant. An experimental study was performed to determine the feasibility of organo-clay for sorption of phenol and Cu(II). In order to determine the optimal mass of cationic surfactants on the sericite, modification of sericite was conducted with various ratios of hexadecyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide (HDTMA), alkyldimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride (AMBA) to sericite. ETIR spectra of the sericite and the organo-sericite showed the decrease in intensity of the OH stretching bands at 3622 cm-1 of the clay after grafting with the hydroxyl groups in the interaction of HDTMA and AMBA onto the clay surface. The appearance of new bands in the spectra of the modified cay, centered at 2922 cm-1 arid 2853 cm-1 were considered to C-H and S-H stretching vibrations, and C-H scissoring bands of HDTMA-sericite, respectively. Phenol removal was significantly increase using organo-sericite at lower phenol Concentration. Sorption of Cu(II) was affected by the various organo-sericites and pHs. Development innovative organo-nanopaticles with large surface area merits more in-depth research.
