Kinetic Analysis on Nitrogen Removal in the Advanced Step Aeration Media System

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the kinetic analysis and characteristics of advanced wastewater treatment on ASAM(Advanced Step Aeration Medialsystem using submerged media in aerobic and reaerobic reactor. Pilot-plant was carried out with treatment capacity of 10㎥/day and HRT 6.2hr. The ASAM system is a device that is available to introduce the advanced wastewater treatment process which can retrofit the operating wastewater treatment facilities using activated Sludge process without expansion of facility area. Using media in aerobic and reaerobic reactor resulted in increase of biomass, and by improving the nitrification rate at low temperature the nitrogen removal efficiency was improved. This study shows that the Mass balance equation of the ASAM system can be practically applied to design wastewater treatment facilities.
