Improvement of sludge handling facility

Abstract
This study is objected to evaluate capacity of sludge handling facilities at "A"water treatment plant. A new method was presented to calculate sludge quantity. Comparison of calculated and measured sludge quantities revealed that the new method can be useful for the estimation of sludge quantity. This study found that quantity of sedimentation sludge considerably exceeded the design capacity of the sludge holding basin. The sludge holding basin was properly designed, but low sludge concentration caused the problem of overloading. Discharge of dilute sludge and leakage was the reason. To rectify the problem, a turbidity meter was installed to prevent discharge of dilute sludge from sedimentation basin. A new control valve was also installed to prevent leakage from sedimentation basin. This study found that improvement of treatment operation could solve the problem of sludge overloading.
