Title
Improverment of Drinking Water Quality for Dental Caries Protection
김수원Su Won Kim
Abstract
Dental caries are less prevalent in people with mottled enamel and concluded that it is desirable for the public water supply to have a fluoride ion concentration of approximately 1㎎/ℓ to promote optimal dental health, but water containing more than 1.0 to 1.5㎎/ℓ must be rejected or treated. The water supplied by Taegu water works agency contains a fluoride ion concentration of approximately 0.0∼0.20㎎/ℓ and the people can take some fluoride from foods, drinks or alternative means of fluoridation, therefore, it is suggested that fluoridation of 0.6∼1.0㎎/ℓ is available according to temperature to promote the formation of dental enamel and protect teeth against caries. About 0.1% of supplied water(1,720,000㎥/d) is used as drinking water in Taegu, therefore, fluoridated water could be provided either to school children by fluoridated water tanks or to citizens by bottled or packed fluoridated water from city water plant. Alternatives to water fluoridation can be considered such as gels, mouth rinses, dentifrices, tablets and drops.
