Title
Modelling for Optimum Design and Operation of Biological Wastewater Treatment Processes
현길수Kil Soo Hyun,강용태Yong Tae Kang
Abstract
The conventional activated sludge process (CASP) being operated in most of plants in Korea has been a problem of inefficient from either a process or an economic prospective in case of application of it to the influent wastewater with the variation of organic loading rates. In order to cope with a difficult situation unexpected taking place in the process of wastewater treatment, the improvement of the existing wastewater treatment systems and the operating manner of the systems is absolutely necessary. Therefore, this research was carried out to investigate and analyze the effect of the biological wastewater treatment process models on management and control of effluent wastewater quality and cost-effectiveness operating manners. The Advanced Step Aeration (ASA) system simulated by the models was considerably cost-effectiveness process for nitrogen and phosphorus removal with an applicable to domestic wastewater with low strength. The results show the computer simulation using the process models could suggest the characteristics of the most cost-effective systems for carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus removal and analyse the characteristics of each reactor of the treatment system without directly carrying out pilot plant experiments, despite the modelling requires more sampling than the one of pilot plant experiment due to the complexity of modelling programs. The simulation also could improve the performance of existing plants by allowing the engineers to investigate the effects of alternative operational strategies.
