Abstract
Completed and operated Sewage Treatment Plants in our contry untill 1997 come up to eighty four sites and 94 precent except for five plants among them is being operated in the form of Conventonal Activated Sludge systems. But this methods have come to be issues on the problems such as vast site areas, excessive constructing and operating costs, highly advanced-maintaining skills and sludge treatment coasts for the large amount of waste sludge. Also, existing methods that are weak in the performance of from 10 to 20 percent N, P removals have not coped with the water pollution owing to eutrophication. In this study, to research treatment characteristics of media in conventional activated sludge system, existing Conventional Activated Sludge system and Media-introduced Activated Sludge system are made a comparative study using a pilot plant in the field. In the performance of Organic matter removal, Media-introduced methid is better than non Media method, improving BOD removal 5%, SS 4%, COD 13.8∼20%, respectively and in nutrients T-N 24.7∼36.2% and T-P 11∼15%. Experiments have it that with shorten HRTs(5 hours) Media-including methods is more satisfactory than Conventional Activated Sludge system with 7 hours.
