Title
The Characteristic of Denitrification on the Fluidized Biological Activated Carbon
김덕진Duk Jin Kim,강용태Yong Tae Kang
Abstract
The characteristics of denitrification on Biological Activated Carbon(BAC), its buffer effect under the variation of inflow water quality especially C/N ratio and the improvement of denitrification activity were investigated using fluidized bed reactor. The experiment was composed of the continuous experiment, nitrate and organic carbon was entered in the fixed concentration, and the semi-continuous experiment. In the semi-continuous experiment, organic carbon was fed one times per day for 20minutes in high concentration though nitrate was flowed in continuously at same concentration with the continuous experiment. The BAC under steady state of the continuous experiments were supplied to the semi-continuous experiment. Saccharose was using as a sole organic carbon. To evaluate of advantages in BAC, the Artificaial light aggregate(ALA) was used as non-adsorptive media. In the continuous experiment, though the BAC was better in the microorganism attach speed, the attached microorganism quantity was almost same as ALA in the steady state. And the denitrification activity of the activated carbon adhesion bacteria is 1.7 times of the ALA. In the semi-continuous experiment, BAC have achieved the average denitrification efficiency of 87%, though the influent C/N ratios were varied from 0 to 508. This is due to the adsorption and desorption capacities of BAC. BAC play a role as a storage tank for the residual saccharose using its micropore during the time when saccharose was supplied, and BAC supplied the saccharose to denitrifying bacteria as carbon source so as to keep high nitrogen removal rate when sucrose was not fed to the columns.
