Abstract
The malodorous toxic compounds contained in wastewaters, discharged by petroleum refineries had been complained by many residents and citizens for the last thirty years in the United States. The governmental agencies had investigated the causes of the malodorous toxic organics for more than ten years. This project was assigned to distinguished engineers in the U. S., including the engineer who was a member of the famous Manhattan Project during the World War II. Sanitation Districts` engineer discovered that the malodorous toxic organics were generated from a reaction of a saturated hydrocarbon and an acid which produces mercaptanes through three years of extensive researches and governmental investigations. Then, this malodorous mercaptans Were chemically treated. This project was successful under the cooperation of inspectors, chemists, and professional engineers.
