Title
Articles / Environmental Impact on Water Quality on Nakdong River by Multipurpose Dam Construction and Its Remedy
김수원Su Won Kim
Abstract
The paper examined the tendency of Nakdong River Raw Water Quality before and after the construction of Multipose Dam along the catchment of Nakdong River. In middle 70`s, raw water quality of Nakdong river was so much polluted that quality of the river became worse than Grade-III along middle and lower part of the river. But the river was developed in better raw water quality showing almost Grade-I or II by the construction of multipurpose dams in up stream in late 70`s. The raw water quality of the river, afterwards from middle 80`s, was being polluted by increase of untreated sewage discharged into the river due to the rapid increase of water demand along the river catchment, more than 2.8 times of domestic use, for example, from `83 to `93. Diversion of the discharge from Yeongchon dam also affected the water quality of Keumho river which is the bigest disbutary of Nakdong river, resulting in Grade-II in middle area and worse than Grade-III in lower part of the river. Therefore, the remedy of the situation is strongly requisited such as to reorganize, first of all, effective water resources management system in one unit authority, and then to promote water management including dam operation, water under takings, groundwater development, sewage treatment and water reuse program on the bases of securing river maintenance flowing.
