Title
Articles / The Study on the system for an advanced water treatment by BAF and BAC
강용태Yong Tae Kang,정동찬Dong Chan Jung
Abstract
The conventional water treatment system which is based on the rapid sand filtration and uses already seriously polluted raw water has been ineffective in removing the contaminants such as ammonia nitrogen(NH4-N), alkyl benzen sulfornate(ABS), trihalomethane(THM) precursors, SS, UV absorbent materials, color, and so on. Therefore, an experiment with a pilot plant was carried out by biological aerated filter(BAF) process in order to find out the characteristics of pretreatment of the raw water-Nakdong river water. The BAF process was very effective in removing NH4-N, turbidity, BOD, SS and KMnO₄ consumption. This process improved water quality of conventional rapid filtration system and extended the life of granular activated carbon(GAC) process which is utilized after sand filter. After filtration process the residual contaminants of ABS, NH4-N, THMFP, KMnO4 consumption and UV absorbent materials were removed considerabliy by the BAC process. The removal rate of BDOC was 40%. In the BAC process the DOC removal was mainly due to a BDOC removal throughout the entire study period. Consequently, it is necessary to add the BAF process as pretreatment and the BAC as posttreatment to the exsisting water treatment system in order to remove contaminants and supply better quality drinking water.
