Effect of Shear Strength on Floc Characteristics

Abstract
This study examines floc characteristics and their effect on sedimentation efficiency depending on applied shear strength. The morphological characteristics such as Feret diameter and Shape Factor were obtained from the analysis of floc images. They exhibit different trends in change with shear strength and have major or minor influences on sedimentation. The result suggests that operational condition can be determined using the relationship between the two characteristics and it can eventually promote improvement in the efficiency of the succeeding solid/liquid separation process. Kaolin particles were flocculated at various shear strength in a modified jar test procedure, and the flocs were sampled to take their digital images.
